NRA begins nationwide distribution of Smart GST machines

The National Revenue Authority commenced nationwide distribution of Smart GST machines to 10,000 GST-registered businesses, complementing the existing electronic cash register system. The NRA said businesses must issue GST receipts for all taxable transactions and consumers must request them.

Finance Act 2026 makes taxpayers replace faulty ECR machines

Section 21 of the Finance Act, 2026 inserted section 34 (8) into the GST Act, requiring a taxpayer whose electronic cash register is damaged, faulty or defective to replace it at a cost determined by the Commissioner-General and published in the Gazette.

Electronic Cash Register Regulations 2021 published

The Electronic Cash Register Regulations 2021 established the ECR system, requiring designated GST taxpayers to issue a fiscal invoice from an accredited device for every transaction, with fiscal data transmitted to the NRA. Taxpayers not yet equipped may keep issuing manual invoices until the Commissioner-General directs otherwise.
